I’ve been a speech writer since 2018. In 2022, I started crafting digital content for nonprofits as well.
For the past seven years, I’ve been preparing talking points and formal addresses for a consul general and an ambassador. This has meant learning to work under pressure: speaking engagements can be added at the last minute and tailored remarks might have to be ready within hours. It has meant paying close attention to world events and being able to comment on them with tact and sensitivity, as well as finding the right voice for different audiences.
In any given week, I might have to compose a television address about WWII veterans and the legacy they left, a report on trade relations, a fundraising pitch for a charity, or a tribute to an activist who advanced women’s rights.
I’ve also written speeches for a philanthropist, an influencer and the president of Manhattan College.
Helping organizations broaden their reach and increase their digital impact is immersive. It means learning about the special corner of the universe a group serves and honing in on a vocabulary that inspires its communities.
But it also means taking a step back and reflecting on how a message can be amplified through its relationship to the elements on a page and proper design: The webpage offers many possibilities for presenting a clear, crisp, and visually compelling story.
Before working in communications, I earned a doctorate in the social sciences and lectured undergraduates about the history of social thought. Sometimes, I even got them excited about it!
